Objective: Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease, which lowers the life expectancy of its sufferers due to the occurrence of some problems. This issue is partly due to some of the complications that this disease brings. The increase in the number of people with type 2 diabetes In 2015, 415 million people had diabetes, more than 90% of them had type 2 diabetes, which is expected to increase to 642 million people by 2040. Studies show that mitochondrial dysfunction is a prominent feature of type 2 diabetes. MOTS-C is a mitochondrial-derived peptide with exercise-mimicking activity that has beneficial effects on metabolism and exercise capacity. MOTS-c stimulates glucose utilization, lipid oxidation, reduces inflammation, and protects against experimental models of metabolic disease. Researchers are looking for alternative methods for prevention or treatment with less complications in diabetic patients, and considering the importance of exercise in preventing complications of type 2 diabetes and the effect it has on the mechanism of mitochondrial peptides; Methods that reduce mitochondrial function disorders will provide a new horizon in the treatment of diabetes and its complications. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to review the performance of MOTS-c peptide and the mechanism of action of exercise training on the improvement of type 2 diabetes.
Methodology: This review study, by searching in the articles available in the databases, Scapus, Google scholar, Pubmed and Farsi including, SID, Magira and with keywords MOTS-c, type 2 diabetes, sports exercises related to the year from 1991 to 2021. The search was limited to articles in English and Farsi whose full text was available. In general, among the 52 articles obtained, 41 articles whose full text was available were examined.
Findings and results: Studies have shown that exercise increases the level of MOTS-c and MOTS-C activates AMPK in skeletal muscles and improves the energy metabolism of the whole body. Also, it improves insulin sensitivity and thus reduces the risk of associated diseases.
Suggestions: According to the findings of the articles, it seems that exercise exercises have beneficial effects on the MOTS_c peptide. In addition, insight into such mechanisms can be a basis for the prevention and treatment of metabolic and chronic diseases associated with physical inactivity.
