Background: Identifying and investigating the factors that cause musculoskeletal disorders can help improve the quality of life and prevent burnout among nurses. This study aimed to investigate the status of musculoskeletal disorders and their relationship with work-family conflict among nurses.
Materials and Methods: In this analytical cross-sectional study, after obtaining permission from the Ethics Committee of Gonabad University of Medical Sciences, Gonabad, Iran, nurses working in the clinical wards of Allameh Bohlool Hospital in 2024 were selected using a simple random sampling method and included in the study if they met the inclusion criteria. After obtaining informed consent from the participants, demographic information questionnaires, the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire, and the Carlson Work-Family Conflict Scale were provided to them. The obtained data were analyzed using SPSS (version 25) and P < 0.05 was considered significant.
Results: A total of 97 nurses with a mean age of 33.39 ± 6.88 years were included in this study. A total of 52 (53.6%) were female; 86 participants (88.7%) had musculoskeletal pain at least once in the past 12 months. The most common site of musculoskeletal disorders was the back (62.9%). A total of 64.9% had musculoskeletal disorders at least once in the past 12 months that led to reduced work activity. The highest observed conflict was work-family time-based conflict, with a mean of 11.46, and the lowest was work-family pressure-based conflict, with a mean of 7.27. No significant difference was observed in any of the dimensions of the work-family conflict questionnaire between participants with and without musculoskeletal disorders in the last 12 months (P > 0.05).
Conclusion: Given the high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders among nurses, managers should take measures in this regard. In addition, the lack of a relationship between work-family conflict and musculoskeletal disorders in this study suggests the need for researchers to consider other factors. Other factors associated with musculoskeletal disorders in nurses may be investigated in future studies.
